Adoption Process:

Step 1: Apply to adopt a pet.

Take a look at our adoptable dogs and cats and apply for the one you think could be your puuurfect family member.

If you don’t see an animal that catches your eye, you can fill out our adoption application as a general application and our adoptions team will work with you to find the right pet for your needs and the animal’s needs.

If you are interested in a foster-to-adopt trial for any of our animals located outside of the DMV, we can work with you to transport the animal here for a trial adoption. Please make sure to indicate an interest in foster-to-adopt in your adoption application or email esmer@justiceforpaws.org for more support.
Step 2: Schedule an interview with our team.

After receiving your application, a member of our team will reach out to schedule an adoption interview. We’ll review your application with you and answer any questions you may have. We will also conduct a virtual home visit during the interview, so we may ensure your home meets the requirements of the pet you are considering.

Keep in mind that we have to ensure the unique needs of every animal in our care. We may suggest other animals at this time.
Step 3: Set up an in-person meet and greet.

If you are approved to move forward to a meet and greet, you will coordinate with the pet’s foster to schedule an in-person meeting. This is your chance to meet (and fall in love with) your potential pet, so you can get a better understanding of their needs, quirks, personality, and everything in between!
Step 4: Officially adopt your new best friend!

Justice for Paws encourages same day adoption if all parties want to move forward. In this scenario, you’d pay the adoption fee and complete the adoption agreement on-site at the meet and greet and take your new best friend home with you on the same day!

If you would like more time to decide, we will request a final decision about whether or not you’d like to move forward with the adoption within 24 hours. You will work with the foster to set up a pick up time and date after your adoption donation and agreement has been processed.

Our team will send you electronic copies of any medical records and a post adoption packet. We are here for you every step of the way, even post adoption! Keep Justice for Paws updated on your new family member.

Our Philosophy

Justice for Paws believes everyone deserves to experience the love and unique bond pets can provide, and we welcome adopters of all backgrounds.

Our primary goal is to find loving, committed homes for every one of our rescued animals. To do this, we get to know each applicant individually to determine whether any of our pets are a good match for your family’s needs.

We’ve worked hard to remove many of the traditional barriers to adoption from our adoption process—after all, the best home for a dog isn’t always one with a fenced-in yard, and being a first-time pet owner shouldn’t prevent you from adopting your new best friend. Our adoptions team will meet you where you are in your adoption journey and invest in your success with guidance and practical support.

Adoption Fees

Adoption fees help cover the cost of medical care, transportation, food, supplies, and more.

Cat Adoption Fees

$175 – 0-6 Months

$300 – Kitten Pair

$125 – 6 Months- 9 Years

$100 – 10 Years and Above

Dog Adoption Fees

$350 – 0-6 Months

$300 – 6 Months- 7 Years

$200 – 8 Years and Above
